Each One Teach One – Spreading the Gift of Literacy
The African proverb “Each One, Teach One” has always inspired me. Its origin, in the days when slaves were denied education and secretly passed on knowledge to one another, is a reminder that learning is not just for oneself—it is a gift meant to be shared. Over time, this simple phrase has grown into a powerful movement across the world, and I too have embraced it deeply at St. Britto’s.
For me, education has never been only about classrooms and exams. It is about using what we know to lift others, especially those who have been denied opportunities. That is why our “Each One Teach One” initiative holds such a special place in my heart. It is my way of showing students that the true value of knowledge is realized only when it is shared.
When our children go into villages, they do more than teach letters or numbers. They sit with underprivileged children and adults, patiently introducing reading, writing, and simple arithmetic. They also talk about health, hygiene, nutrition, and values that build a better life. I have seen the joy on the faces of villagers when they realize they can read a word for the first time or write their own name—it is priceless.
The method is simple but powerful. First, students learn a concept. Then, they take the role of teachers—sharing it with someone else, observing, guiding, and reflecting together. This not only strengthens literacy for the learner but also builds confidence, communication, and empathy in our students. It is amazing to watch children transform into little teachers, with such pride and responsibility in their eyes.
But literacy is just the beginning. Our outreach programs often include yoga, meditation, indoor games like chess and carom, martial arts for confidence, and even street plays to challenge superstitions and spread awareness. In collaboration with the Seek Foundation, health camps are organized so families can access basic healthcare. Slowly but surely, we see communities becoming stronger, more hopeful, and more aware.
The beauty of this initiative is that the cycle continues—when adults learn, they feel encouraged to teach their children. A ripple of education spreads, and with it, a sense of empowerment and dignity.
I often remind my students of Mark Victor Hansen’s words: “Each one, reach one. Each one, teach one. Until all are taught.” And I hold close Aristotle’s belief: “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” For me, these are not just quotes, but guiding principles.
Through “Each One Teach One,” we are not just teaching alphabets—we are nurturing responsibility, compassion, and a belief that knowledge, once shared, has the power to transform lives. That, to me, is education in its truest sense.
